By 322 B.C. Alexander the Great had extended his empire over most of Egypt and western Asia, and Hellenistic Greek jewelry had become more ornamental and colorful as a result of exposure to these new cultures. Richly decorated, embossed or filigreed surfaces were a distinctive feature of this jewelry, as was an expanded repertoire of gems.
